About the Gallery
The gallery is a collection of personal and professional works – ranging from miniature painting to fantasy illustrations. Works include finished pieces along with works-in-progress and sketches. For me, going back and forth between 2D and 3D work helps push my understanding of both, as well as furthering my understanding of light, color, and composition.
Miniatures
Single Miniatures
Warhammer Fantasy Fighter
This is a vintage Games Workshop Warhammer Fantasy metal miniature from a box set that I bought in 1992 or 1993. During this time, I was just learning how to wet blend. At the time, I wasn’t happy with the shield or the base work, but I was (and still am) reluctant to repaint or rebase any of my past work. I think it’s important to just move on to the next piece and anything I think was a mistake, to learn from that and try to avoid making those same mistakes in future works.
Warhammer 40K Terminator Captain
This is a vintage Games Workshop Warhammer 40K metal miniature from the original box set that I bought in 1991 or 1992. This was a piece I entered in a local miniature painting contest, which was technically my second painting contest and first in the “old-hand” category. While I did take first place with this model in the single miniature category, I ended up sealing it with a gloss (oops) varnish so that I could use it in my Blood Angel army at the time. I’ve thought about hitting it with a matte or satin varnish to dial back the gloss, but decided I didn’t want to potentially damage the paint job further.
Vintage 80s-90s Fantasy Miniatures
This is a collection of vintage fantasy metal miniatures from the ’80s to ’90s. From about 1986 to 1996 I played a number of fantasy RPGs from Dungeons & Dragons to the Fantasy Hero (Hero System), which are what most of the following models were painted for.
Team Miniatures
Necromunda Delaque Gang
During the mid-90s, I worked at a local hobby games/comic book shop. I got heavily into Necromunda, but unfortunately the only painted gang I still have is the Delaque gang seen below. They were mostly dry brushed to get these to the table as fast as possible. Over-all, I was pretty happy with how these turned out, and at the time, these had the best bases I had sculpted and painted – especially for a team of models.
Sculpts + Kitbashes
My First Kitbash (Conversion for Us Oldtimers)
This kitbash is mostly a generic chaos terminator with a head out of the original Rogue Trader Space Marines box set. The tail, tongue, bone, horns, fangs, and clawed feet are mostly green stuff with tooth picks, florist wire, and sand (texture) for the wings. This was basically my first full conversion and one of my earlier painted pieces. In retrospect, I wish I would of used some pre-made wings instead of scratch building them. The paint style is mostly wet-into-wet and I learned a lot from working on this model. For reference, I was pretty young – around 14 or 15 – and this was my first entry into a local painting content, which required me to put this into their “novice category,” which won Best of Show in the novices. I only mention this, as winning contests is cool and all, but when you’re young, it can actually give you a false sense that you’ve “solved this problem” and not push yourself to keep painting and learn more. Coming back to painting after a 15-20 year break, it’s been eye opening how far the hobby has come and how the internet seems to have raised the bar incredibly high by providing access to seeing work from all over the world.
Vintage Warhammer 40K Inquisitor Terminator Kitbash
This is another oldschool Warhammer 40K terminator kitbash that I worked on a couple years after the previous terminator – sometime in the late ’90s or early 2000s. This is mostly one of the original Ordo Malleus Inquisitor Terminators, but I wasn’t really happy with the designs of the arms and legs on that model. I ended up using bits from normal terminators, grey knights, and sculpted various elements and iconography. Unfortunately, I stopped sculpting and painting about this time as I went back to college part-time and didn’t get back into the hobby until about 10 years later in 2012. I’ve been tempted to finish this, but I also like seeing the raw process of how I built this – as well as the new sculpts are so much better now, I really want to work on the new stuff.
